  • Yes. Island includes the WireGuard VPN, an open-source protocol that is peer-to-peer based, meaning either end of a VPN connection can be a “server” or a “client”. Island comes with proprietary extensions to make VPN set up and operation easier.

  • Island implements the Wireguard protocol, and works with any VPN provider that supports WireGuard, including NordVPN and others. Refer to https://www.allthingssecured.com/vpn/wireguard-vpn-list/ for the most current compatible VPN services, as that list continues to grow.

  • IslandExpress is an Island-specific feature that provides an easy way to configure a VPN between two Islands without the need to manually exchange long keys or configuration files. You simply specify a secret password and the address of the remote Island on at least one end of the connection, and Island takes care of the rest. Note that IslandExpress can be used only from one Island to another.

  • Yes. When a VPN connection is set up, every device’s permission to use the VPN is initially disabled. Permission must be granted to each device, user, and/or group before it can access the VPN.

  • Yes, VPN access can be scheduled by device, user, or group.

  • AutoTrust is a feature of IslandExpress. When AutoTrust is enabled on a VPN server, any new VPNs created using IslandExpress are immediately enabled and ready for use.

    When AutoTrust is disabled, new VPNs created with IslandExpress must be manually enabled on the VPN server before they can be used.
