Existing Layout
• Combo Unit or modem with or without AP/Mesh
• Switch
These steps address environments where there is a combo unit with:
An existing mesh network where the mesh is being used as the router
A mesh network that is not being used as the router
A stand-alone combo unit that is being used as the router
If APs or mesh are not already in your existing network, acquire and install according to the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure they are in AP mode, not router mode.
Step 1:
Power up Island. Wait about 30 seconds for the light to turn from white to blue.
Step 2:
Plug Island into the switch. Within seconds, Island’s Smart Swap feature learns the existing network addresses.
Important: This is now your LAN port. Note the port number.
Step 3:
Step 3: Identify the cable connecting the LAN port on the combo unit to the switch. Unplug it from the switch and plug it into any port on the Island (either a 2.5G port or 10G port with appropriate transceiver).
Important: This is now your Island WAN port. Note the port number.
Step 4:
Place the combo unit into bridge mode according to the ISP’s or the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure its Wi-Fi broadcast component is disabled as well. Reboot the combo unit.
Note: If you can’t put the combo unit into bridge mode, Island will still function, but remote access capability and performance will be affected. We recommend you contact your ISP to provide modem-only service (preferred) or to place the combo unit in bridge mode. Failure to do so results ina double-NAT and can affect performance and VPN access.
Step 5:
You may continue with set up using either the phone app or the web app.
Recommended: Instead of launching the app, plug a laptop into Island, open a browser, and type my.islandrouter.com to continue with setup.
If using the phone app, make sure you are connected to the newly installed Wi-Fi and launch the app if you haven’t already. The app will discover Island and continue with set up.
Important: We recommend you go directly to the network menu to configure your LAN and WAN interfaces. Click here for instructions.
